In fact, staying just outside of DC can be better and more fun than actually staying in the city, not to mention more cost effective. As long time DC residents we almost always advise travelers to look at staying just outside DC and using the Metro to commute into the city for attractions. Below we’ve compiled a list of great alternative locations near Washington, DC in Arlington and Alexandria Virginia that are home to hotels within walking distance near the Metro.
Why Use the Metro
Taking the Metro is more cost effective than driving around in DC. For one you’ll find that it’s cheaper to take the Metro due to the high cost of parking, and second it is faster given the frustrating DC traffic. Finally, most hotels in DC are more expensive on weekdays than weekends due to the large number of business travelers and conferences. Take advantage of this and stay over the weekend for better savings, and utilize the public transportation DC has to offer to save you time and money!
Arlington Hotels Near Washington, DC
Rosslyn – Tourists and business travelers will appreciate Rosslyn as a great place to stay near DC. Found along the blue, orange and silver metro lines, this commercial center of Arlington is very convenient to the National Mall and Georgetown. Commuting to Downtown DC only takes about 10 minutes. There are plenty of restaurants in the area, and Rosslyn tends to quiet down significantly after business hours and weekends, making it ideal for travelers looking for a relaxing place to stay just outside of DC.
Rosslyn has five hotels near the metro station. The best one being the Holiday Inn, which has good rates and free parking. The Best Western is good for economy minded travelers and also offers free parking. For travelers looking for nicer accommodations, Le Meridien offers more luxury at a higher price, but has significantly more affordable prices on weekends.
Courthouse/Clarendon – The Clarendon neighborhood of Arlington is a fun and vibrant area with plenty of restaurants, shopping and nightlife. A popular location for locals to party, travelers looking to have a fun night out will appreciate this neighborhood. The residents in the area are typically young families and young professionals. The commute to downtown takes between 10-15 minutes.
Clarendon is home to four hotels near the Courthouse/Clarendon metro stations. The Hilton Garden Inn is the best ranked of the four, only two blocks away from the metro station and affordable weekend rates. The Residence Inn has moderate to moderate-high rates, and boasts an indoor pool, free breakfast buffet, suite rooms with kitchens and a short one block walk to the metro station. The Hyatt Place is the farthest from the metro, at five blocks, with affordable rates and free breakfast buffet available. Clarion Suites usually has the cheapest rates and parking fee in Clarendon. This hotel is three blocks away from the metro and offers suite rooms with kitchens and free full breakfast.
Ballston – The Ballston neighborhood is a popular choice in Arlington for travelers. Access to Reagan National Airport (DCA) is easy and travelers driving in will appreciate Ballston being right off of I-66. The close proximity to the National Mall is also a big draw for Ballston, with a 15 minute commute by metro. Ballston offers family fun with restaurants, sports bars and an ice skating rink all within walking distance.
There are four hotels near the Ballston metro station. The Comfort Inn is often the choice because it offers free parking and free breakfast buffet. This hotel is, however, seven blocks away from the metro, but the walk is pleasant. The Holiday Inn is three blocks to the Metro station, they have an outdoor pool and free hotel shuttle, but parking and breakfast come at a fee. The Hilton is only a block away from the Metro station, but expect to pay for wifi, parking and breakfast here. The Residence Inn, two blocks from the metro is new as of 2015 and has an indoor pool and free breakfast buffet.
Crystal City is a great location because of its easy access to DCA, downtown, and the National Mall. It is generally more affordable than neighborhoods in DC. Tourist will appreciate that there are restaurants nearby. Altogether the area is a welcoming urban pocket. There are six hotels within walking distance to the Crystal City Metro station. All of these hotels offer a shuttle to the airport. DCA is less than a 10 minute drive from all hotel options. Out of the bunch without question we recommend the Americana hotel.
Alexandria Hotels Near Washington, DC
Braddock – The Braddock Metro station is located in Old Town Alexandria, close to DC, Reagan National Airport and Mt. Vernon. Travelers will appreciate the number of fun things to do in Old Town including a number of boutique shops, restaurants and waterfront bars. Families and couples will enjoy the water taxi to Georgetown and quick 20 minute commute to the National Mall. The hotels in this area are between 5-6 blocks to the metro station, but there is a free trolley service that will take you throughout Old Town and to the metro stations. Of the four hotels in near the Braddock Metro station we found Best Western with its cheap rates, free parking, wifi and breakfast.
