Why: Free Breakfast, Wifi, Low Weekend Rates

There are six hotels within walking distance to the King Street (Alexandria) Metro station. Since this area is prone to lots of business travelers during the week you will often see a sharp increase in hotel rates Sun-Thu at all hotels. During the weekend often rates at the Hampton Inn, Hilton, and Hilton Garden Inn will drop to more reasonable levels (less than $150 per night). For the average travelers most often we suggest prioritizing the Hampton Inn, because they offer guests free wifi and a free breakfast buffet. You won’t find this combination of free amenities elsewhere. The Hampton Inn also has a pool and a gym. Parking at Hampton Inn is $20 per day which is about $10 less than nearby options except the Wyndam which offers free parking. The Alexandria trolley service will stop near the Hampton Inn making it easy to commute to restaurants and shopping closer to the waterfront portion of Alexandria. For the location Hampton Inn is our first choice.

Staying Near the King Street (Alexandria) Metro

nieghborhood_vibe_48Alexandria Neighborhood: The King Street station sits on the business end of Alexandria. Within several blocks you’ll find plenty of unique restaurants and main street shopping. One downside to the King Street station is that it sits further away from the waterfront and main attractions. The metro station is several blocks away from the historic downtown and waterfront area of Alexandria. Instead of walking use the free trolley for a lift from the Metro to the historic old town. The area around King Street itself is bustling every day of the week, and is an urban setting. Families and all types of travelers can’t go wrong with Alexandria.

things_to_do_48Things to Do: Old Town also offers its share of shopping. While you’ll find a number of national chains, such as Anthropologie or Lululemon, you’re more likely to find locally-owned antiques shops and clothing boutiques. If you can’t find what you’re looking for on King Street, hop a water taxi to Georgetown or across the Potomac to National Harbor. (National Harbor is also a short drive over the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.) The historic district here offers the opportunity for guided or self-guided walking tours of the landmarks, such as the church where George Washington worshiped. The waterfront is also a popular spot to take in the sights—here is also where you’ll find the Torpedo Factory Art Center with rotating displays of local art. And, of course, Mount Vernon, the estate of George Washington, is just south of Old Town, a short drive or a scenic bike ride away. The Mount Vernon Trail, which connects Mount Vernon to DC runs directly through Old Town and is a popular trail for runners, walkers, and bikers.

If you’re willing to explore the area a bit more, walk down King Street towards the water—or take the free trolley that runs from the metro station to the waterfront—and you’ll find something to satisfy your appetite. For a nicer night out that won’t break the bank, The Majestic and Columbia Firehouse both offer slightly upscale takes on American classics and terrific service. You’ll also find that the bars run the spectrum from divey sports bars to upscale cocktails.
